 Mary-Sue
is a freelance journalist, designer and editor. She is a member of Planetary
Association for Clean Energy. She has served as a Graphic Designer for the
Canadian Department of National Defense (DND). She has been very involved
in campaigns for political and social change, chairing citizens groups,
setting up meetings and lectures, and writing policy proposals addressed to
municipal, provincial, and federal levels of government.
We at PESN highly value Mary-Sue's editing that
she does of most all the news stories we publish. She does much more than
catch errors in writing, she understands the field and asks cogent questions and
often adds content to cover important areas that need to be addressed.

What's in a Name?
Haliburton v Halliburton
To anyone who wonders about my name, please note that it is spelled with one
"L". The origin is saxon/border-scot, and the syllable "hali"
(an anglo-saxon word meaning "healthy" is the origin of the modern
"holy"). It is a place-name, derived from a church being in the
fortified town (burg, tun) from which the first ancestor named himself -- back
in the twelfth century when all residents of Britain were ordered to select
surnames. (Others named themselves based on profession e.g. Smith, Baker, or
various other categories.) The branch of this family from which I come took root
in Nova Scotia in the mid seventeen hundreds, and many still reside there.
The double-L Halliburton branch of the family, endemic to the United States,
would likely not acknowledge me as a relative. You have to go back about three
centuries to find even a common ancestor. The oil-besmirched Halliburtons have
certainly never offered me any largesse from their amassed fortune. Since I have
opposed for years (at personal expense, and without noticeable benefit or -- so
far -- results worth noting) the policies from which they derive such profits,
it would be illogical in the extreme for them to reward me.
After genetic research was undertaken with such enthusiasm, the analysts
informed us that all Europoids are descended from no more than seven "clan
grandmothers", and beyond that, some even claim all humans are descended
from a single African woman. We are all related physically, but genetic
similarity in no way entails that we must all think the same.
