Bowman Magnet Motor Open Sourcing Project

Status: Project commenced Dec. 2003 with claim to a working device, which later, after three months, ended up running down due to demagnetization.  No replications were accomplished though several were attempted.

Bearings Considerations

TO DO: We need to distill this info down into something that can be presented concisely on the specs page.

Hi all,

As reduced friction is a high priority in the motor, may I suggest using the highest ABEC rating possible. I'm a semi pro-inline skater and I use a minimum of ABEC 9 bearings due to cost.

There is a very significant difference between high and low ABEC ratings. A rule of thumb is the higher the rating the better but at a cost to being more vulnerable to wear and damage through contamination.

I would personally; use fluid bearings once the exact replications have been built and verified.

A further modification could be the introduction of shielded magnetic bearings; these could be manufactured so not to interfere with the drive magnets in the wheels.

just my thoughts,

Andy Pears.

And there are also air bearings... at a high price.

Regarding bearings...For this application (in prototype stage) the best choice is ball bearings without seals.  This provides the most freewheeling spin.  Seals generally cause some friction.  I am getting bearings with seals and I will actually remove the seals and the thick grease to get the best unrestricted spin.  Obviously in a production model we would need to seal the bearings.  Good source for prototype bearings is W. M. Berg (USA)  but expensive in low quantity.
