Ken Hegemann's MXLO Magnetic Motor replicationMXLO Magnet Motor Open Sourcing Project

Summary: This open sourcing project sponsored by Pure Energy Systems, based on a design by MXLO, commenced Mar. 3, 2004 and was active for about a month.  At least 14 (8 verified) replications were built, none of which worked, proving that MXLO plans are neither easy nor complete, contrary to what they insinuate on their site, which now redirects to the U.S. government's renewable energy site. On July 10, a hint about shielding was given that was not contained in the plans.

MXLO Misrepresents the Adequacy of Their Plans

Contrary to MXLO website, their plans are not adequate, and the device specified is not easy to get to work.

Partly Resolved March 17, 2004

MXLO has modified their "Parts/Plans" order page, adding the following comment prior to the "continue order" button.

PLEASE NOTE: Not everyone will be able to build a working unit simply by reading and following the plans. Adjustment of the assembled unit is required as is patience in performing these adjustments.

MXLO Plans are Not (1) Adequate nor (2) Easy

Subject: [pes_mxlo] An open letter to MXLO [...]

Hi Thomas,
We are concerned on a couple of matters.
1) You do not give any indication on your website nor in your plans that the plans are not adequate to successfully replicate the device.  But on March 10 you said to me, "we cannot tell anyone exactly how to operate the unit." (ref)
2) You do not give any indication on your website as to the difficulty of getting the device to run after it is built per your plans.  But on March 15 you told RetroRocket59, "Think of it as threading a needle from across a room, it is a difficult task but it can be done."  (ref)
In our view, these are very serious misrepresentations [...].
We (pes_mxlo individuals) commenced this project with the expectation -- based on statements on your site -- that this device would both be easy to build and to operate.
[We think you should] modify your website to honestly portray that (1) the plans are not complete, and (2) the device is not easy to get to run.
[It would also be nice if you would relay to us (comprised largely of many paying customers)] the final information required to get the unit to operate [...].  Follow through with your word.

Sincerely,
Sterling D. Allan

MXLO Reply: Nothing Amiss; You're Too Impatient

Subject: (MXLO reply): An open letter to MXLO to come clean

(Sterling's preface regarding message below from Thomas Jean of MXLO)

Thomas is in serious denial.  With all the talent we have seen directed to the replication of device, to no avail at a working unit, even with drawing extensively from MXLO input, Thomas is still claiming they do not misrepresent the (1) adequacy and (2) ease of the plans as posted and sold on their site, and duplicated on ours.  This lack of integrity does not speak well of them.

Regarding the NDA offer below mentioned by Thomas, I was advised against entering into such by the PES board and our outside counsel.  It would create too much of a potential liability and conflict where our stated mission is to open source our technology.  Why should thy require an NDA when their website promise is to assist people to build a working unit based on their easy plans?  No NDA is mentioned there; not even a hint.

Sterling,

Your subject title was an inappropriate choice of words. We have nothing to come clean about and have offered every bit of support we possibly could for your group, this includes going extra steps in supporting those who were not in our customer base, but stated they were members of your PES forum.

Everything in the plans is adequate to replicate the device other then the way to start the unit, which we support our customer base to overcome, and which you now know as the adjustment of stator around rotor. We are not further obligated to disclose to you or your group exactly how the device works outside of what is already disclosed. Unless your group is full of 11-year-old elementary students, I am certain they have the knowledge, understanding and belief of how and why a magnetic motor works otherwise they would not be pursuing the matter.

I personally have expressed many times that not everyone will build and run this unit, nor will everyone who builds a Bowman, Calloway, Meg, or one of the many other magnetic motors be successful. It takes patience, which you seem to continue overlooking.

As for your statement of our misrepresentations, and a violation of trust, please consider the following.

I gave you the opportunity for a full disclosure of the device, and it's workings, but you chose to make this public to your group, which then complicated the terms. If you feel trust is an issue, then you must reexamine your choice. I suspect this was due to your anticipation to profit from the device instead of being bound by a non-disclosure, which by the way would have been a benefit to your group, if not to you.

The purchaser of our material must agree that their purchase is "for educational purposes only" before placing an order, so nothing within our website needs to be changed for your satisfaction.

A gift is placed before those who recognize and accept it. Those who do not can simply return it to the store.

Sincerely,

Thomas Jean

Statements from MXLO Site That Imply (1) Adequacy of Plans and (2) Ease of Function

Note that MXLO has known of our quest here at this open sourcing project to replicate their device, and they are fully apprised of the difficulties we have encountered over the past two weeks to get even one device working among at least twelve independent attempts by competent individuals; yet they have not changed the wording on their website to reflect this difficulty in any way.  The following statements are taken from their site as it appeared on March 16, 2004.

(Pre-purchase, public statement from website)
Quoting from: http://www.magnethealer.com/pp.html

  • "We are however offering the complete parts list, and easy to follow instruction booklet for building a working unit, the cost of the booklet is only $29.95"

[(1) The statement clearly says that the plans are adequate as they are, to easily produce a working unit. (2) Explicitly states that the end result of following the instruction booklet will be a working unit, based on the plans alone.]

(Pre-purchase, public statement from website)
Quoting from:
http://www.magnethealer.com/learn.html

  • "The device is self rotating when hand brake is released"

[(1) No hand brake is described in the plans. (2) The device is self rotating when hand brake is released -- makes it sound like the only problem is braking.]
  • "The part that many do not know is the correct geometric configuration of the device.
"This simple device consist of ..."

[Implies that the plans contain adequate instructions to provide the correct configuration.]
  • "Because of the high speed this device can develop a plastic hand screw, with rubber boot is used for braking and controlling speed."

[(1) No such plastic hand screw is described in the plans.  (2) Implies that the device works so well that the only problem is stopping it.]
  • "Unit can be assembled in less then 45 minutes."

[Implies a completed unit ready to run, which will run.]

(Pre-purchase, public statement from website)
Quoting from: http://www.magnethealer.com/faq.html

  • "This unit will produce voltages in the range of 50-280 VDC adjustable only by speed and voltage regulators."

[Implies a working device.  (No voltage has been measured from replicated units when manually turned, according to those of pes_mxlo who have tested this.)]
  • "Because of the dangers associated with the voltages that can be generated, we do not sell assembled units. You assume all risk by assembling unit."

[Implies that "assembled unit" per plans provided will result in a working unit that produces substantial voltages.]
  • Q. "Is it difficult to assemble?
    A. "The (english only) instructions are very easy to understand, and the parts included are marked so you know exactly where to attach the magnets.
"On average it will take only 45 minutes to assemble.
    "

[Implies that not just assembly but function is easy as well, though not explicitly stated.]
  • Q. "How long will the device run?
    A. "With proper care, and adjusted speed, the device can run continuously without attention.
"If over sped, or heated above 80 șC, the magnets will demagnetize.
    "

[Implies that the unit runs with no major difficulty; and that the only problems worth mention are over speed and heat.]
  • "Outside of the unit being assembled and producing current, we cannot offer any advice on . . . "

[Implies that MXLO will provide adequate instruction to (1) assemble and (2) produce current, which is tantamount to a working device.]
  • "If after assembling the unit as instructed, and for some unknown reason it does not run, we will offer you support via email as to adjusting rotor/stator air gap etc.
"If this support does not correct the situation we will refund your purchase price, after unit has been returned assembled within the 30 days minus your shipping cost."

[Statement is referring to their kit; but the implication is that support will also be given for plans.]

(Post-purchase, private statement from website)
Quoting from: http://www.magnethealer.com/secure/

[Quoting from the plans as given after purchase]

Now that you have all the parts complete, the final step is to run the motor.

First set aside stator body. Now place rotor shaft into bearing. Now carefully center body of stator over and around shaft. Rotor will start to spin. If rotor is spinning slowly adjust the centering of the stator body until rotor spins faster.

To stop rotor from spinning simply set stator body off center or lift off base.

Use caution with leads when working near stator body as you may receive a severe shock if touched.

If you need any help with running the motor please send an email to priority@mxlo.com

[Implies a very simple step of placing stator over the rotor to get device to run.]
